CNN to air Alex Gibney's 'Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine' this Sunday CNN has launched a microsite advertising its upcoming broadcast of "Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine," the controversial Alex Gibney documentary about Apple's iconic co-founder.

It took them 40 years to make a biopic about the life of Jackie Robinson. And only 3 years to make 4 movies about Steve Jobs. Between the two, I think Robinson was a more significant historical figure in American history.

At 7.4mm thin, the A9 features a full HD (1080p) Super AMOLED display, 3GB RAM / 32GB storage, and a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 652 SoC, all powered by a massive, albeit non-removable, 4,000mAh battery.

'Blank’s Rule': To predict the future, 1/3 of your team needs to be crazy | VentureBeat | Business | by steveblank, Steve Blank Yet in 1961 LOR was a completely insane idea. We hadn’t even put a man into orbit, let alone figured out how to rendezvous and dock in earth orbit, and some crazy guy was suggesting we do this around the moon. If it didn’t succeed, the astronauts might die orbiting the moon. However, Houbolt wasn’t some crank, he was a member of the Lunar Mission Steering Group studying space rendezvous. Since he was only a mid-level manager, he presented his findings to the internal task forces and the experts dismissed this idea the first time they heard it. Then they dismissed it the second, fifth, and 20th time.

Cult of Android - Evernote is killing Skitch, Clearly and its Pebble app Evernote’s efforts to streamline its business will see it chop a number of apps from its lineup, including the popular annotation app Skitch. If you'd bought Apple stock instead of an Apple III, you'd be a millionaire

If you'd bought Apple stock instead of an Apple III, you'd be a millionaire In December 1980, Apple’s newest computer was an Apple III, with a starting price tag of $4340. Today, you’d be lucky to get that much for it — despite the relative rarity of that particular model.

Apple’s official IPO anniversary is actually tomorrow, December 12. At the time, the Wall Street Journal noted that, “Not since Eve has an Apple posed such a temptation.” It wasn’t wrong. The company’s public offering turned out to be the biggest since the Ford Motor Company in 1956.

Steve Jobs, just 25 years old at the time, ended the day valued at $217 million.
While you're at it, you should travel back in time and invent plastic.

Cook says Apple won't race Google to bottom of education market, calls Chromebooks 'test machines'

Cook says Apple won't race Google to bottom of education market, calls Chromebooks 'test machines' At an Hour of Code educational coding session in New York on Wednesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook said his company is interested in building powerful, meaningful products for students and teachers, not inexpensive "test machines" like Google's Chromebook.
Not sure that I'm a fan of Chromebooks, either, but at least on a Chromebook you can write code that powers a Chromebook (Javascript, Chrome extensions, etc). On an iPad, if you want to learn how to write apps for it, you need a Mac. Nothing wrong with that, but I think that means the iPad is not really a machine for launching new coders into the next era. I think the Raspberry PI is the Apple ][ of this generation. I suppose you could write an Apache Cordova application on an iPad. Also, MAD LOGO is interesting.

Epson says this process is more efficient than sending paper to an off-site recycling plant, and it's also much more secure: the PaperLab, which breaks paper down into its constituent fibres before building them back up into new sheets, is one of the most secure paper shredders that money can buy.

My coworkers made me use Mac OS 9 for their (and your) amusement | Ars Technica For about $75, I was able to pick up an 800MHz model with 512MB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive. It worked but included a non-working battery, no power adapter, and a wonky power jack. For $8.86, I picked up a new power jack (happily, it was separate from the main logic board in those days), and another $15 got me a used genuine Apple adapter (third-party substitutes are widely available for a few dollars less, but I am terrified of cheap off-brand chargers). That brought my total to a little under $100.
Adventures in old-timey usage of one of the very best laptops ever made. Mine still works perfectly, although it boots in to Jaguar, not OS9.

I like being independent.”
Most of the major platform success have been driven by openness. That would include Unix, which is the underpinnings of all Mac and iOS devices. Without the openness of unix and GNU, I don't think we would have iOS or Mac OS X.

Once you add the keyboard, it's not really an iPad anymore, is it? It's an iMac running iOS on ARM. Without a stand or a mouse.

Heads up: Unity mac store rejection Unity Deprecated API Usage - QuickTime | Unity Community

So, I will fix this code to use the non-deprecated AVFoundation framework for 4.5. The question for us to find out, is if this fix will go back to 4.3.2 (as it is not a trivial change), or if we'd rather chose a faster fix by temporarily disabling webcam support in OS X standalones to fix this. Does anyone critically need web cam support in OS X standalone?
I'm not sure you can even call OS X an operating system. I have 16-bit, pre-protected mode Win16 code written in 1989 that, as of 2012 was still running on Windows XP and Vista. Hadn't tried it on Windows 7 or 8, but as long as WOW (Windows-on-Windows) is working, does a fine job of illustrating why Windows rules the desktop.

I guess the Mac is going the way of the Watch. Meaning it's jewelry, not a computer.

Gene Amdahl, Pioneer of Mainframe Computing, Dies at 92 - The New York Times Michael J. Dr. Amdahl is remembered at IBM as an intellectual leader who could get different strong-minded groups to reach agreement on technical issues.

Apple's iPad Pro & powerful A9X CPU pose threat to Intel, Cowen says

Apple's iPad Pro & powerful A9X CPU pose threat to Intel, Cowen says A look at the GPU shows a similar story: The A9X outperformed all Apple laptops that use integrated Intel graphics, registering a three-to-four-times improvement in frame rate of the 12-inch MacBook with Retina display. The iPad Pro processor also posted an improvement of as much as 40 percent over the Intel Iris 5200 integrated graphics featured on the 15-inch MacBook Pro.

Lumia 950 / 950 XL Vs iPhone 6s / 6s Plus [Specs Comparison] | Redmond Pie The last few weeks may seem like they have been all iPhone and Nexus announcements or releases, but Microsoft got in on the act earlier this week by announcing two flagship smartphones of its very own. The much-rumored Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL are now very real.
Possibly a little disconcerting.

Amazon launches AWS Mobile Hub for testing, running, and monitoring iOS and Android apps | VentureBeat | Cloud | by Jordan Novet

Amazon launches AWS Mobile Hub for testing, running, and monitoring iOS and Android apps | VentureBeat | Cloud | by Jordan Novet Amazon Web Services (AWS) today announced the introduction of the AWS Mobile Hub, a service for building, testing, deploying, and then monitoring iOS and Android apps. The tool is live now in beta, and it’s free in the sense that you only pay for the services that the Mobile Hub uses, including AWS compute and storage services.
Amazon may be kind of nuts, but at least they envision useful new services and not weirdly random dot com hype factories that do nothing useful. Believe me, this is very useful.

DJI launches Osmo, an iPhone-connected 4K steadicam for $650 The DJI Osmo uses the company's three-axis gimbal stabilization technology found on other devices, like its Phantom drones, to eliminate the shake found on traditional handheld cameras, like a GoPro. DJI says its new product, priced at $649, makes it easier than ever to get super-smooth cinematic shots on the go.
This is really cool.

iPhone 6s Camera Vs Nikon D750 DSLR Video Quality Test | Redmond Pie

iPhone 6s Camera Vs Nikon D750 DSLR Video Quality Test | Redmond Pie The iPhone’s current standing in the mobile photography ladder aside, owing to the ever-improving quality of the device’s camera, critics and photography enthusiasts have also taken it upon themselves to compare its relatively recent iterations of the product line to professional photography and videography equipment. However, most who own a DSLR camera and understand its modular nature would likely scoff at the very idea of comparing one to an iPhone camera, even if it is that which comes packed with the latest generation – most, but not all.
I think this is kind of exciting except that the features that the DSLR has that the iPhone doesn't might get very expensive in the long run. But what do I know?

'Steve Jobs' review: Finally, a great film about Apple's fiery genius | VentureBeat | Media | by Fletcher Babb

'Steve Jobs' review: Finally, a great film about Apple's fiery genius | VentureBeat | Media | by Fletcher Babb It’s not easy to make a good movie about Steve Jobs. (Sorry, Ashton Kutcher. You tried.) But, finally, director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin have given us Steve Jobs, a movie that distills Steve’s huge, complicated persona into a tightly wound backstage thriller.
I like how it looks like the Windows Logo reflected in his glasses.

Steve Jobs’ co-workers share fondest memories of Apple co-founder | Cult of Mac It turned out to be an incredibly good lesson and it set the tone for the Mac group. The electric light had been invented and Thomas Edison wanted to have not just a burning bulb, but a beautiful thing. He convinced Tiffany, and artist, to make lamps. Tiffany used glass and chemistry and metallurgy to build art that was very useful to control light.

Amazon gives Apple TV and Google Chromecast the finger | Cult of Mac

Amazon gives Apple TV and Google Chromecast the finger | Cult of Mac The most popular online retailer in the world, Amazon, is using its e-commerce powers to put the hurt on Apple and Google’s streaming devices in order to prop-up the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV stick.
Amazon Prime streaming TV works better than any of the other services I've tried. I don't think it needs propping up at all. In fact, some of the other services should think about using Amazon's content delivery network because it's clearly in a class all it's own. Without the network, H.264 is basically useless for streaming. Unless you like that buffering screen.

Inside Google's master plan for faster, sharper streaming video - CNET: "Google has been trying to improve the situation with technology called VP9 that compresses the video data so they can move across networks faster. If you're planning to use the device mostly at home, faster 802.11ac on the iPod touch is a great benefit. It's a toss-up."
I've always preferred the pod.

Apple will now pay artists during Apple Music’s free trial | Cult of Mac: "Apple has changed its mind on the decision not to pay streaming music royalties to artists and labels during the three-month trial period of Apple Music.

Yesterday, Taylor Swift penned an open letter to the company arguing that, ‘We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.’

Swift publicly pulled her best-selling ‘1989’ album from the service in protest."

So let's be absolutely clear that the only reason iOS 8 is on my iPad 2 is because there is no way to remove it. Unless there is some major improvement in iOS 9, my iPad 2 is effectively a technological brick that will never, ever be used again for anything useful. Google I/O 2015 sets a low bar for Apple's WWDC to leap

Google I/O 2015 sets a low bar for Apple's WWDC to leap
From all the breathless coverage detailing Google's I/O 2015 conference announcements, you might not have noticed that virtually all of what Google had to show this year were things Apple had already introduced over the past year (or long ago).

I'm not at Google IO, so... but either we're looking at different announcements or somebody has their head in the sand. Between Google Wear's touchable fabrics and the RADAR interaction interface, these announcements are just as forward-thinking as anything Apple has announced recently.

"Where do 3rd party application developers go?" is a more important question. The same question from the early 90s when Microsoft Windows 95 was the 80% to Mac OS 20%. The answer is: the healthiest 3rd party eco-system drives worldwide dominance.

You could call Android the "Windows XP" of mobile. Which could be a back-handed compliment. Or it could be a way of describing that the next 10 years will be dominated by Android.

Google’s Project Tango tablet now available to everyone for $512 via the Google Store | 9to5Google
Google’s Project Tango initiative was originally introduced last year alongside a tablet with “advanced vision capabilities.” Until today, the tablet had only been available with an invite, but now the device is listed on the Google Store for anyone to purchase (via Android Police). Google dropped the price of the tablet for invitees to $512 earlier this year and that’s also the price for which the device is available on the Play Store.

This is really interesting.

Apple Watch found to be compliant with Qi wireless charging standard
AppleInsider reader Albert C. Lee reached out on Friday to share his video, where he shows the Apple Watch magnetic charger being used with the Moto 360. Final Cut creator Randy Ubillos leaves Apple after 20 years

Final Cut creator Randy Ubillos leaves Apple after 20 years: "Ubillos started out at Adobe, where he worked on the first three versions of its Premier software. He later jumped ship to Macromedia where he helped to create KeyGrip, a pro video editing program based on Apple's QuickTime.

KeyGrip was later renamed Final Cut, though Macromedia could not release it due to licensing issues. Apple eventually purchased the Final Cut team and software outright, and saw its development through.

In addition to Final Cut, Ubillos was also responsible for the creation of both iMovie and Aperture during his time at Apple."
